Sadhana Renewal Center (Center for the care of the mentally challenged, Alcholics and Drug addicts)

On 25 August 2006 St Thomas Province gave life to a new missionary activity in the archdiocese of Thiruvanathapuram with the inauguration and blessing of Sadhana Renewal Centre at Monvila. On that day Mr. Siby Mathew IPS inaugurated the centre in the presence of the Archbishop Soosai Pakiam and Provincial Superior Rev. Fr. Augustine Mundiath. The centre is established for the care of the mentally challenged, the alcoholics and the drug addicts. Sadhana Renewal Centre is an associated activity of the Claretian Community of Santhwana at Valiathura. The archdiocese has temporarily given this centre to the province for initiating missionary activities particularly for the care of the alcoholics. Accordingly, under the initiatives of Fr. Alexander Kureekattil the province started a monthly retreat program for the alcoholics here in 2004. Later Fr. Kureekattil has envisionecl the urgent need to care those people wandering in the streets, market places, bus stations and railway stations because they are left alone due to various reasons like mental and psychological imbalances. He had collected almost 30 such persons from the streets and gave them shelter in Sadhana and that was the beginning o[ a great missionary endeavour here. The centre has a rich history behind it. It was build as a film producing centre by Mr. Anthony who later sold it because of some technical reasons. The archdiocese bought this centre and all the property and turned it as their minor seminary for some period. As the facilities were not sufficient for the seminary plans were made to change it as a retreat centre. fith this purpose the archdiocese approached the Claretians and the Santhwana community at Valiathura. Thus began the monthly retreat program for the renewal of alcoholics and drug addicts. From August 2006 onwards the ministry of caring the mentally challenged has become part of mainstream activities of this centre. Today the centre is run in close collaboration with the Trivandrum Archdiocesan Social Service Society (TSS), the Congregation of the Prabhudasi Sisters, and various other governmental and non-governmental organizations. At present the centre has 32 inmates aged between n 18 and 75.

The objectives of the center are:

To care for the mentally- challenged. especially those wandering in the streets, market places and transport stations.
To provide spiritual, psychological and physical assistance towards the integral welfare of the above mentioned people.
To conduct monthly retreat and renewal programs for the drug addicts, alcoholics and other substance abusers.
To work in collaboration with governmental and non- governmental organizations for the welfare of the mentally challenged and the alcoholics.
To provide assistance to the families of the inmates especially counselling and guidance.
