Care Home (Centre for the care of Persons living with HIV/AIDS)

CARE Home is a charitable organization working for the support of people living with HIV/AIDS. The activities of CARE Home began in May 1998. As a charitable society it was officially registered under the Registrar of Societies and formally inaugurated in the year 2000.

CARE Home is the brainchild of Fr. Jose Thenpillil, who during his doctoral research in Sociology at Bangalore University studied the socio-cultural dimensions of people living with HIV/AIDS. Experiencing the not so human approach of the society and the people towards the AIDS patients Fr. Jose felt the urgent need to respond to the situation in a proactive manner. During the days of his research itself he started heaping the patients, their families and the general public and began awareness campaigns and counselling programs about the need to care for this suffering lot. He was able to receive tremendous support from peopie in and around Bangalore and even from abroad. This motivated him to form an organization for the care of people living with HIV/AIDS. He is also the first Director of the organization.

In the initial stage CARE Home had its base at the Sumanahalli Leprosy Rehabilitation Centre at Magadi Road, Bangalore. Later when the province of Bangalore was divided and St Thomas Delegation was formed this ministry became part of the Delegation. The office was then shifted to Hennur Road. In 2003 the activities of GARE Home was extended to Kerala and a new office was opened at Kochi. During the five years of its activities more than 300 patients and their families have become beneficiaries of CARE Home.
