Provincial speaks …

My dear brothers and friends in Christ Jesus

During this season of the greatest grace and the kindest mercy of God our Father and His Son our Lord Jesus Christ, it is indeed a unique privilege for us to be able celebrate again the feast of our founder St. Anthony Mary Claret. St. Claret and the large company of our beatified Claretian brothers bear witness to the fact that the gift of faith, lived and witnessed in love and communion in the fellowship of the community, is the best guarantee to be and to become authentic witnesses of Jesus Christ in today’s world. The persuasive invitation of Pope Francis in his World Mission Sunday Message is worth repeating. “The men and women of our time need the secure light that illuminates their path and that only the encounter with Christ can give. Let us bring to the world, through our witness, with love, the hope given by faith! The Church’s missionary spirit is not about proselytizing, but the testimony of a life that illuminates the path, which brings hope and love.”

“You will be my witnesses … to the ends of the earth”. This post-resurrection command of Jesus to his disciples in Acts 1:8 has been faithfully followed by the Church down through the centuries. She sent missionaries to the remotest corners of the earth. The Holy Father is emphasizing the need of it in his message mentioned above. The Claretians too have done it dutifully. But the martyrs invite us to understand and put in to practice Jesus’ command not only spatially or geographically but much more in a temporal sense as well; i.e. ‘Be my witnesses till the end of the world; till the end of your life; till your death’. Bearing witness to faith in Christ and love of Christ at all costs, not running away from trials, suffering and pain must also be understood as martyrdom, but one of a different kind. That indeed will go a long way in advancing the New Evangelization. All those baptized and consecrated are earnestly invited to such a style of witnessing.

In the company of the Claretian martyrs of Sigüenza, Fernán Caballero and Tarragona who were beatified on 13 October 2013 let us thank and praise God and resolve to do everything possible to give Him greater glory through our life. Very Rev Father Superior General reminds us that in the heart of each of the 23 martyrs they found a strong movement of those loves that made them brothers - the love of the Word of God, the Eucharist, the Heart of Mary, the Founder, the Congregation and the mission. The very same loves lived in fellowship and communion with our brothers in community and in the province will go a long way to be authentic Claretian Missionaries. All the members of the community must help one another to be faithful to Christ and to the Church always.

October, dedicated to devotion to the Holy Rosary, is an acceptable time to grow in our filial relationship with the Blessed Virgin Mary, our mother and formatrix. One of the most efficacious means for the New Evangelization is indeed the Holy Rosary. Of the various promises granted to St. Dominic for those who recite the rosary I want to highlight two: All who recite the Rosary are my sons and daughters, and brothers and sisters of my only Son Jesus Christ. The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in heaven. As we recite the rosary daily let us keep these alive in our mind.

Let me wish a very happy feast of our father founder St. Anthony Mary Claret to all my brothers and students, to all our benefactors and friends and to all the recipients of our mission!
